Chicken Pox

Chicken pox is a viral infection which is characterized by red rash which cause itching. It is caused by the herpes zoster virus, and usually affects children where there is minimal risk of complications. However, adults with chicken pox can develop complications such as bacterial pneumonia.

People who have had chickenpox almost always develop lifetime immunity. However, the virus remains dormant in the body, and it can reactivate later in life and cause shingles.

There is no cure for chickenpox, and the virus usually clears up by itself without any treatment. If you or your child is in pain, or has a fever, then you can give them a mild painkiller. Many creams and lotions are available which help with the itching aswell.

Talk to your pharmacist for advice on pain relief for children, and other symptomatic treatments available for chicken pox.
