Bone Spurs

A bone spur is a small bone growth on existing bone. It is usually smooth, but can cause wear and tear or pain if it presses or rubs on other bones or tissues in the body.

Common places for bone spurs include the spine, shoulders, hands, hips, knees, and feet.

A bone spur forms as the body tries to repair itself by building extra bone. It generally forms in response to rubbing or stress that continues over a long period of time. Some bone spurs form in the elderly, as part of the aging process.

Bone spurs do not commonly have any symptoms, unless tissue or bone is being compressed. In such cases it is normal to have pain and swelling associated with the tearing of the tissue.
