Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder in which an individual experiences severe mood swings between excessively happy periods (mania) and excessively sad periods (depression).

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not known, but stressful life events or emotional damage in childhood may play a part, possibly combined with genetic factors

Symptoms include:
Depressive symptoms
Manic symptoms
Mood cycles

It's a serious illness, one that can lead to risky behaviour, damaged relationships and careers, even suicidal tendencies if it is not treated. If you or someone you know has thoughts of death or suicide, contact a healthcare professional, loved one, friend, or call 999 immediately.
