Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. Sometimes these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal.

Some specific problems that may result from impacted wisdom teeth are:
Pericoronitis. This is an infection of the soft tissue surrounding the tooth, caused by a buildup.
Cavities. These occur if plaque is allowed to remain on the surface of the tooth for a long time.
Periodontal disease. This is the medical name for gum disease and occurs when plaque is not cleared off the teeth through frequent brushing and flossing.
Cysts. These occur rarely. Today, wisdom tooth removal is recommended only if there's a good reason to do so.
