Syphilis

Syphilis is a highly contagious disease spread primarily by sexual activity, including oral and anal sex. Occasionally, the disease can be passed to another person through prolonged kissing or close bodily contact with an infected person.

Syphilis is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum.

Symptoms include:
A painless rash that can appear all over the body or in patches.
Flat, wartylooking growths on the vulva in women and around the anus in both men and women (often mistaken for genital warts).
A flulike illness, tiredness and loss of appetite with swollen glands, which can go on for several weeks or months.
White patches on the tongue or roof of the mouth.
Patchy hair loss.
